Who will you choose?

I heard a story about two men. One man was really poor. He only has a hundred dollars, he gives you ninety-nine dollars out of the hundred dollars he has. There is another man that has a hundred thousand dollars, he gives you one thousand dollars. Who do you think is the better person? Who will you choose?

Great post, Betty!

I, personally, would vote for the person who gave 99 dollars (out of his 100 dollars). There is a story in the Bible where Jesus sees many people making donations to the synagogue (like Christians do at when they attend church or Buddhists do when they give alms). There were many rich people who came and gave a lot of money, but then He saw an old woman put two small coins (like two pennies). He told His friends that the poor woman had given more than all the others. She sacrificed more than the others did (for she had given all that she had while the others gave only out of their riches and still had a lot of money to spend).

Betty, You ask a good question about what real generosity is. The first person in your story sacrificed more than the second person did. The first person's generosity caused him to sacrifice more than the second person. Your question makes me stop and think about how I practice the virtue of generosity. Thank you for your thoughtful post.

Have a great summer (and keep on writing)!
